Description
I wanted a computer that could do a little bit of anything. It'll mostly be used for streaming. The only games I play on my computer are Age of Empires, Sim City, Pirates!, Dawn of War. So a computer that would handle that plus my daily workings was all I needed. I also wanted something that would last. I think I got all I wanted.
CPU: I went with the A6 for two reasons first it was priced right. Secondly it was more than enough for what I needed. I cant really comment on how it runs yet because the PC isnt 100% done, I still need to install my OS... which should be here soon. I hope.
MOBO: I was originally going to go with a MSI board but when I went to order it this board was only 79.99 so I got this one instead. Its pretty. I think they had the MI-008 case in mind when they made this board, it was way easier to get to everything than it should have been. Again I cant really comment on anything yet as I havent really gotten to use the computer yet but so far I'm happy with this. The BIOS is attractive and easy to navigate.
RAM: I went with 4GB and if I was starting over again I would probably stay with 4GB but do it with a single stick instead of the 2x2GB. Not a big deal but it would have made going to 8GB easier, if I ever wanted too.
I only have a 120GB SSD inside the case, I was worried about space inside so stuck with just a SSD. Its basically just for my OS. I have a 1TB external that'll be hooked to it as well. Again if I was starting over there is plenty of room to put a HDD inside along with everything else.
The MI-008 case is perfect for what I needed. Its size is dead on to fit on the corner of my desk and under the little shelf. After reading a lot of reviews and all the builds on this site I was concerned about cooling and cable management. Turns out the cable management, while tedious and somewhat aggravating, isnt half as bad as one might assume. Maybe because I dont have a HDD shoved in the front but all the cables rolled up nicely and tucked up under the 3.5" drive bay. As others have noted the stock PSUs fan blows right on the CPU, I flipped mine and cut a vent in the top of the case.
I put in a 120mm fan on the one side, then I decided to put in one of those expansion slot exhaust fans. Then I said " Theres plenty of room right here for another 80mm fan." So I put another on there. I was going to put in a 80mm fan blowing out air in the front right side of the case next to the 120 but I got tired of fans. All three fans are run off the fan controller. The controller itself is a cheap thing, but it works and lights up pretty bright... which is good because my power led isnt working. Thats about all I can say about the case. It was a lot easier to work with than I was expecting. And this is my first Mini build.
Save for the power LED not working everything seems to be running great. I may get rid of the expansion slot fan as it is loudest of the bunch. The computer as a whole is whisper quiet, its setting right next to me running and my laptop is louder than it.
Edit: The stock PSU started making a lot of noise after about a week. I had a hard time finding a replacement that would fit and was ready to ghetto rig an external power supply. Then I found two PSU that had the same dimensions as the factory one. Regular SFX form PSUs were too deep, most going 5" or more back which would work but I have a dvd drive. Anyrate, Silver stone makes two PSUs with the exact measurements of 2.5 x 3.9 x 4.9. If you are using the MI-008 or any variant from any company these PSU should fit. One is even modular, though it is 100 bucks. I have ordered the modular one which makes my lil budget build kinda not a budget build but such is life. Also went ahead and bought faster RAM didnt need it but I had n extra bill laying around.
