Description

This build was an emotional roller coaster to say the least. When I first started ordering the parts I obviously ordered them all within the same week. Problem was that the 970 was not in-stock anywhere, and it still isn't as I am writing this. I ordered it on the 24th of September and received it on the 16th of October. I will get back to that. Anywho. Since the GPU was back ordered I figured I would build it anyways and run it off of integrated. (Hence the reason there is no GPU in the pic with most of the parts there.) So the first frustrating thing was the back orders of the 970, then I realised that the computer would shut off 3 times before it would actually stay on. After days of tinkering I updated the BIOS and that fixed it. Then I the GPU came on the 16th. Popped that sucker in right away and ran some benchmarks. Wow was that ever depressing. I got 9600 on FS.. Others were getting 12k with the same specs. So I rebooted and then the highest score I got was 10549... That is okay I guess but I wish it was better. Another funny thing that happened was prime 95. Ran prime 95 for 10 minutes and it reached 100c.. Lulz. Apparently it is pointless to run prime 95 on Haswell chips because their thermals spike right away. Not too sad about those scores though. I ran Unigine Heaven on extreme preset and did really good. Did better then all of the reviewer websites. (Cant remember score) Then I ran Valley and did even better :D Reasons I went with these specs:

CPU - I was debating between the 4690k and 4790k for a little bit. Ultimately I went with the 4790k because I want this thing to have as much future proofing as possible. I know it doesn't exist but it does in regards to doing as much as you can at the time you buy everything

CPU Cooler - Okay many of you are going to hate on me for this thing I know it :P Why did I get it? Good question. I wont overclock yet and because it looks good. No point in me getting an H-240x went I wont OC for a few years. And that it what I do plan on upgrading to an H220x or H240x :)

Motherboard - I simply wanted a board that had great audio, quality and aesthetics and that basically highlighted everything on the Hero :)

RAM - Got these bad boys on sale for $76 in CAD. That is an amazing deal in Canada so I had to jump on it. I will be purchasing 8GB more near Christmas.

Storage - HDD: Wanted a higher performance HDD and this is what I got :) Also has a 5 year warranty.. Cant beat it. SSD: was on sale for $58 CAD. Was in the middle of class on newegg and I saw it on there and I had to jump on it. WWI History<Saving $20

GPU - Too much hype to ignore it. 970 gives 290x performance for $150 less and way less noise and power consumption. yes please

Case - I have had this case for 8 months already. I ordered it because it was on sale so I just threw it in my closet and then 8 months later I used it :)

PSU - the G2's offer way too much quality/performance/price ratio to ignore. 750W for future SLI

FQ:

I am running Windows 8.1

LED kit is from costco.

No you cannot get a room with it ;)

Thanks for your time guys :) Tell me if you like it and tell me if you dislike it and why! Thank you :D

UPDATE I have recently added another 8GB of the memory, another 970, and I have changed the CPU cooler to an H100i. I did the H100i and memory at around Christmas time and I just recently added the other 970. To go with the 970 I got an ROG Swift which is spectacular! :)

By the way the enermax air cooler really fits in with the theme of this build so as long as your temps aren't too high!! 100c on prime doesn't sound right maybe cooler is not seated correctly also try reapplying thermal paste....

devlos

yes

fuzzygoat
  • 10 years 6 months ago

Okay good idea. I will order some new stuff. The stuff it came with I think is garbage

Blackie_Sheen
  • 10 years 6 months ago

yeah those temps are definitely not right, I have this cooler running at 65 degrees running both gpu and cpu stress test at the same time in aida 64 running at a max of 1500 rpm

fuzzygoat
  • 10 years 6 months ago

You're right. Ran it for 3 mins and 48 seconds and it reached 100c again. I'm ordered some artic silver thermal paste. How did you install the paste? Smear it on or did you put a pea size on the place the cooler on?

Blackie_Sheen
  • 10 years 6 months ago

I spread it evenly but most people recommend only putting a pea size dot so you should go for this way and not mine

devlos
  • 10 years 5 months ago

Try the stock cooler and see what your temps are? It seams like the enermax cooler is not seated.

what are the LEDs?

byrdada
  • 10 years 6 months ago

Yeah I'd also like to know. And can you make it change between colors on its own?

LEDS are from costco. And yes there are tons of options to make it change on its own. The kit is made by "SYLVANIA" Check ebay?

Did you just song-bomb me by using that title! Curses!!!

Very pretty build you got there, friend. How much was the Strix again? I forget. PCPP took the item off of there list of GTX 970's.

fuzzygoat
  • 10 years 6 months ago

I got it for $350 CAD

AminNausin
  • 9 years 5 months ago

where?? how??

fuzzygoat
  • 9 years 5 months ago

When it first came out. They didn't really think to make the Canadian GTX 970's more because of the exchange rate. They eventually corrected this and that;s why they're like $430 CAD now.

WWI History<Saving $20. LOL at that, totally agree. Awesome build.

  • 10 years 6 months ago

Wow for the money and Canadian prices to boot excellent build very clean. I just finished my htpc last night and I am starting my main rig upgrade today... Swapping to an enthoo pro a seasonic plat and swapping in a gigabyte 970 g1( I wanted the strix that you have because aesthetically it is VERY pleasing but it's always sold out !!!!

fuzzygoat
  • 10 years 6 months ago

The G1 was my second choice.. The backplate :o

jacobs4525
  • 10 years 6 months ago

If only the LED on it were RGB on the G1 970. I personally have my heart set on the twin Frozr one. It's kinda the middle ground between the silence of the Strix and the performance of the G1.

fuzzygoat
  • 10 years 6 months ago

Ikr.. Only issue I had with the MSI was the lack of a backplate.. :( wish they had one or I would have gotten it!

jacobs4525
  • 10 years 6 months ago

True. Still, it looks fantastic, and overclocks very well. They will probably end up selling a backplate on their website, which is annoying because they should've included it in the first place, but in reality I'm still gonna buy it, so it doesn't matter.

maesterorion
  • 10 years 6 months ago

The lighting on the first pic is just awesome. I'm with Sed about the thermal paste, yes that CPU gets hot quickly, but that's a little extreme. That's a REALLY nice looking build.

fuzzygoat
  • 10 years 6 months ago

Thanks! I will definitely apply different thermal paste. I wasn;t too sure with the stuff in the first place

alnakib80
  • 10 years 6 months ago

Your write up made me chuckle. Can mine get a room with yours? haha very funny. Nice build, so what are your thoughts so far for the 970? in a bit more detail. I want to do a living room mini itx practice water cooler for (z97i with my old 4770K) and then next year when ddr4 and the hype is over im gonna build a monster 3 way sli 970. SO are they all u hoped they would be? great build by the way.

fuzzygoat
  • 10 years 6 months ago

At first, I was really disappointed with my 970. Then I ran basically every other benchmark other than Firestrike and I was absolutely stunned how well it did! I definitely suggest it and it deserves all of the hype it is getting

alnakib80
  • 10 years 6 months ago

thanks this all helps in my decision making stage..

fuzzygoat
  • 10 years 6 months ago

If I were doing a triple SLI build I would definitely get these cards: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/evga-video-card-04gp41970kr

Only reason is because it doesnt blow hotair in the case. I would get a full tower case and run as many 200mm intake fans as I could.

SplinterFox
  • 10 years 6 months ago

Very nice build! I'm making one similar with the same Card and case etc :)

did you get a network adapter or did your mobo come with it?

fuzzygoat
  • 10 years 6 months ago

Wireless network adapter or LAN? Most if not all motherboards come with a wired network adapter.

brelovix
  • 10 years 6 months ago

Not bad. The system looks very pretty in my opinion. I hope that Strix is doing you well :D +1

fuzzygoat

It is so quiet! Thanks :)

GMAN-DV8
  • 10 years 6 months ago

The build looks very clean and nice. Dont worry about not getting a fancy liquid cooler, the air cooler you got will be just as reliable if not more reliable and will do you just fine. But later on down the road if you decide you need to overclock you could pick up another cpu cooler.

fuzzygoat
  • 10 years 6 months ago

Thanks :) That is actually exactly what I had in mind

CrimsonYeti

Kitsunay

Hey man, kinda curious about what happened to your graphics card. I'm starting my first build, a computer that should last me the next couple of years, using the same processor and the GeForce GTX 970 Twin Frozr V. So far, I've had to special order my graphics card the same way you did. By the way, the lights in that thing are really awesome _^

fuzzygoat
  • 10 years 5 months ago

Its been going pretty good! What questions do you have? :)

Kitsunay
  • 10 years 5 months ago

Why did your graphics card get there in almost a month? Also, have you had any major bottle necks? To be honest, I'm only a day into ordering my parts. I'm anxious because it's my first build and I'm really, really geeking out over the parts xD For the sake of availability, should I settle for the R9 270X, or would you recommend waiting for the GTX 970?

fuzzygoat
  • 10 years 5 months ago

Definitely wait for the 970. No question is it worth the wait. No bottle necks and it took a month because it was so high in demand.

Kitsunay
  • 10 years 5 months ago

Luckily, it appears the 970 came in stock and I've ordered one. I'll see the parts come in 1-2 weeks and I can't wait to get started. Thanks for the advice! I won't regret choosing the better card :)

fuzzygoat
  • 10 years 5 months ago

sphenoid12
  • 10 years 3 months ago

On your very first picture, you have the LED lights set to a soft purple, but it looks like there is red behind the mobo in the corner and the fans up top. Is there a different LED cable in the back? Same question on your last picture, maybe your mobo lights up on its own? I want to recreate this effect. Thanks!

fuzzygoat
  • 10 years 3 months ago

The motherboard does light up on it's own. That is one of the reasons I went with this board :) Feel free to ask more questions!

WasabiLord
  • 10 years 1 month ago

Great build! It looks amazing. I am trying to build a computer too, and I have a few question. I plan on using pretty much the exact same setup, save for a few parts, so how hard was it to fix the ,"the computer would shut off 3 times before it would actually stay on. After days of tinkering I updated the BIOS and that fixed it." Also, what is "FS"? Thanks!

fuzzygoat
  • 10 years 1 month ago

Super easy to update the BIOS. All you need is a USB stick and a second computer. Simply download the latest version of BIOS for YOUR specific motherboard from your manufacturer's website, and then go to the BIOS update utility and select your file etc.. Pretty straight forward. If you can build the computer you can definitely do this with no issues. And FS is FireStrike which is a benchmarking software. Please feel free to ask any more questions :)

Is the cooler LED to bright? Or is it overbearing, thinking about putting it in my future computer.

fuzzygoat
  • 9 years 3 months ago

It has a brightness adjustment on the remote. You can go super bright or almost off.

AminNausin
  • 9 years 3 months ago

Did Your nvidia sticker come with the strix?

fuzzygoat
  • 9 years 3 months ago

No, my friend ordered them off of ebay. They're really cheap

Notchj73

Do fans come with can? With the tower case i mean?

fuzzygoat
  • 8 years 11 months ago

Not the ones in my build. The case does come with some though

Brad.Neil

Why would you get a 970 after what happened with Nvidia? They lied about it having 4GB of vram, well technically there is but it's separated into to chunks so you only get 3.5GB of vram.

mckeer
  • 9 years 4 months ago

Using a 970 at 1080p barely scratches 3GB even in the most demanding games. At 1440p and higher is where it starts to falter at Ultra settings

Brad.Neil
  • 9 years 1 month ago

Assuming you like to play your games at 30fps.
