Personal Computer, Bicycle, what's the difference anyways?

  • 41 points

The difference is you have to manually "overclock" the bicycle... with your legs. =)

  • 14 points

Well, they both cost the same, anyways...custom, that is.

  • 4 points

depends on the price range, apparently an entry level bike is 3-5k

Bike Tier List:

  • Mountain - good beginner bike $1000, mid tier $1500, upper class $2500, top shelf $5000
  • Road - good beginner bike $750, mid tier $1500, upper class $3000, top shelf $6000

Of course, you can always spend more than $5000+ on a bike, but only if you're a real enthusiast, or a pro racer.

Is it better to build, or buy a prebuilt?

  • 4 points

Better to buy a prebuilt if you're a casual biker.

  • 2 points

Almost always cheaper to buy a prebuilt bike because the component manufacturers give the frame manufacturers discounts that are passed on to the consumer. Even after setting the bike up to your size/style it is usually cheaper to buy a complete bike. The only reasonable reason to build a bike from scratch is if you are going to pull a ton of the old components off your last bike, or have a **** ton of money and want everything exactly to your liking.

Mountain: Good beginner bike: $1300-1500, mid-tier $3000, upper class $5500, top shelf $9000-$10k

I'm not familiar with road bikes but I can say for sure that your price ranges are incorrect.

  • 1 point

My price ranges are correct for standard and most of the enthusiast biking.

The cost for custom building and prebuild depends on the region. In Europe there is a lot of competition - both in manufacturers and stores, so you can always get a good deal if you know what you're looking for and where to look for.

I have explicitly stated that more than $5000-6000 is only viable for a pro racer. Of course, bikes exist that have just their frames costing $10000, but that's ultra high-end, and there is no price limit for that type of comodity.

I said, mountain bike. And there is no mountain bike with a frame that costs over $4500 in existence.

I love the new site! A fresh look...I like it!

I am noticing that bikes are super expensive when custom-built though...:( I'll still join the forum when I can to learn about it!

Now i understand cause you didn't dispatch any new build video for one year.

  • 9 points

The build videos are a limitation of the new office. We are working on finishing permitting and getting approval to start construction of our new studio space.

Does this mean the new responsive layout will be going live soon?

Much as I love PCPP, I spend most of my time browsing on mobile and using the desktop site on a phone is a rough experience to say the least.

  • 7 points

Yes. We built CyclingBuilder in tandem with the work we did on the new responsive templates and I've been working lately on getting PCPP up on the same templates. Still ironing out styling as well as finishing out some pages that CyclingBuilder doesn't have yet (Completed Builds, Blog, etc) but it's coming along nicely. :)

  • 14 points

In tandem?

ba dum tss
  • 1 point

Saw that too :)

  • 5 points

It will. We have most of the layout converted over. Completed builds are the last remaining templates that need migration, and I anticipate that being finished in the next couple weeks.

  • 2 points

Do you have a github where we can see progress and maybe a roadmap? Maybe we could even contribute?

  • 3 points

Wow, with the chepaest frame you can get a nice, complete bicycle, this is a very expensive hobby. Can wait to see the UI implemened on PCPP

So enable PCpartpicker mobile version again?

  • 2 points

We'll be rolling out the responsive layout, so it'll adapt automatically to mobile/tablet/desktop.

  • 2 points

Not sure where to post this but I'll put it here - I'm a huge fan of the new responsive layout.

Fantastic update.

Very happy to see this released. Look forward to using it! (Currently none of my components are there (Yet))

I wish smartphones were modular.

  • 2 points

hi would you ever consider making a similar website but for modular synths?

  • 1 point

I can build a better pc for that price then I could build a bicycle for that price.

  • 1 point

i never thought this day would come

  • 1 point

ok cool . just for fun checked out the possible most expensive cycle relative to the frame is $8380.69

  • 1 point

Huh boy... check back again... I was halfway through the list and at $13,000 USD...

  • 1 point

gg phillip. If I ever wanna build a custom bike, I now have a place I can go!

  • 1 point

Someone should do this but instead with car parts. Would be cool.

  • 2 points

One day...

  • 1 point

that would be even more complicated

  • 1 point

Man, you ain't kidding there!!!!

  • 0 points

It would be cool, but by the time they finished it everything will be EV and autonomous anyway. Very few people will own their own car by 2030.

  • 1 point

Very interesting look! It is awesome how you guys are expanding!

  • 1 point

Wow! Looks cool! Will I be able to use my existing PCPP account with this website, or will I have to create a new one?

  • 1 point

you'll have to make a new one.

  • 1 point

9 days late, but cool (That would be April fools for the iDots)

  • 1 point

this is actually awsome do more, like a car or something

  • 2 points

We have more in the pipeline for sure. The hard part is making sure that launching a new site doesn't starve the existing sites for resources.

  • 1 point

is the UI shown in Cycling Builder coming to PCPP? I would like a clean UI like Cycling Builder.

  • 1 point

It is. We have a few pages that need to be converted over, but that shouldn't take too much longer.

hey can you guys please make a custom keyboard maker with a keycap customizer, cases, stabilizers, pcbs, mounting plates, switches, and 60% and 100% sizes? Please?

Pro Biker: What bike do you have? PC Enthusiast: Oh, I just have a Intel i7-7820X Bicycle frame and Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 handlebars!

  • 1 point

Wow. Impressive.

Well done on everything. PCPARTPICKER, CYCLING BUILDER, WATER INFRASTRUCTURES.

I see a pattern leading to something bigger. Not to take away from anything so far. Absolutely fabulous job all around, but does the future include 'electric car builder' and 'small molded solar home builder"?

You're setting such a good example.

Cheers

This is awesome! I finally don't have to rely on Bikologi or Fanatik to make a bike build. Thanks guys!

EPIC I'm pretty pumped. I maintain and do a bit to my own bike but this could prove to be a very useful tool

Ok, hear me out: A PSU that can hook up to a wall socket and two small floor-mounted bike pedals. You get less power from the socket and more from the pedals.

We're adding an up-to-date laptop section here on PCPartPicker. Hope to have it up late next week though it may take time to flesh out the product category (we're focusing on most recent/popular laptops first).

  • 2 points

How will the laptop section work? Could you search for a laptop with a specific type of graphics card?

  • 3 points

Yep. Filter by CPU type, GPU type, storage, RAM, etc.

  • 2 points

Sounds amazing! Thanks for giving me such a quick response. On a kinda off topic question, do you still have your three way graphics card build running? I noticed it on your completed builds list and thought the concept is pretty cool.

  • 2 points

I don't unfortunately. Pretty much all the builds in my completed builds section have been parted out and repurposed to other things. The only build I have remaining is my dreamhack build that I did a youtube video for but never created a completed build page for it..

  • 2 points

Would it be possible to inclue the refresh rate of each labtop in the labtop section?

Are all labtops at 60 hz?

Ooh that sounds exciting.

We do hope to add those in at some point, but I'm not sure when it'll happen. Our initial rollout of road/cx/mountain spread us a bit thin, so I want to make sure those areas are properly filled out before we add any additional types.

  • 2 points

any point in the future are you going to implement E-bikes?

agreed
